It’s been nearly 20 years since Boston has done a proper tour and six years since “Corporate America” was put out. Sounds about right since we’re talking about the eternally patient Boston here! Sadly, the very talented Brad Delp passed away several months ago and is sorely missed, but Tom Sholtz has assembled a stellar band nonetheless.
This version of Boston is spot on. The tightness and precision playing was spectacular and the sound was predictably crisp and clear. Sholtz, ever the mastermind perfectionist, led the band through of the hits and some lesser known stuff as well. “Rock and Roll Band”, “Peace of Mind”, “Don’t Look Back” and the intense “Smokin” sounded brilliant and the guitar and vocal harmonies were truly amazing. Hats off to guitarist Gary Pihl who not only equaled Sholtz’s playing, but kept him on his toes! A highlight for me was when the band broke into “Walk on” with Sholtz rocking out on the Hammond Organ. He let rip with a couple solos that would have had Jon Lord take notice.
Who knows when Boston will tour again? If the band stays true to their output and my math is correct, well, I figure 2015 for a new album and maybe another tour in 2025!Hope I’m wrong!
