The “Halloween Hootenanny” came to town starring the gruesome twosome – Alice Cooper and Rob Zombie, with the appropriate openers the Murderdolls along for the ride.
The Murderdolls are out touring on their excellent new release, “Women and Children Last,” and were the perfect opening act for our horror legends. Wednesday 13, Joey Jordison and their band of ghouls rocked the casino with their short, punchy, rock/punk hybrid sound.
Zombie opened his show by entering through a giant flaming robot as his band pounded out “Jesus Frankenstein,” while enhancing the thematic approach by showing a series of “The Bride of Frankenstein” clips. Other horrific hits included “Pussy Liquor,” “Thunderkiss 65,” and “Werewolf Women of the SS.” Throughout, the props were aplenty including a huge jack-o-lantern and witches hats that were thrown into the audience. John 5 and Piggy D have, in their own right, become as visual and pivotal to the show as Zombie. And Joey Jordison looks to have really found a true home away from home during Slipknot’s hiatus.
The legend himself, Alice Cooper, hit the stage to the immortal “School’s Out”. As always, Alice delivered an incredible array of props as well. By the third song, Alice had been thrown into a straightjacket and decapitated through that ol guillotine. There’s always a fine balance between the theatrical visuals and the songs. “Wicked Young Man,” “Ballad of Dwight Frye,” “I’m Eighteen,” and other hits came and went throughout the 22 song set list to the absolute delight of the sold out audience.
This was a true celebration of all things Halloween run by two people in the music industry who know it better and love it more than anyone else. Both Alice and Rob’s work over the years prove that they have a true passion for everything from the tongue-in-cheek thrills to the truly macabre that define the creepiest day of the year. Seeing them both cripple the audience with their full set of enjoyable horrors made everyone in attendance thrilled that the two finally got together to make such a show a reality.
